A beautiful historical novel about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths cross in occupied
France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Marie-Laure loses her sight at age six and her father begins to build her neighborhood in miniature so that she can learn to navigate outside on her own. As she adjusts to her blindness the war rages and at age twelve they are forced to leave Paris and take refuge with a recluse uncle in a house by the sea. Meanwhile Werner is an orphan that finds his talent is fixing broken radio equipment – a hobby that gets him out of the orphanage and leads to a positon within a brutal Youth Hitler academy. Their stories finally meet following a bomb raid and you will be left with the beautiful vision of youth during a horrible time in history. There aren’t words to describe the beautiful writing in this novel – you are truly swept away with the images and descriptions.
