Curly, his childhood name, born in 1840 of the Oglala Sioux tribe was known as a hero by his people and earned the name Crazy Horse at age 18. Interestingly, he spent most of his childhood near the Holy Road, known to white people as the Oregon Trail. The concept of Manifest Destiny drove the pioneers west and led to conflict with the Native Americans trying to preserve their way of life and protect their traditional lands. The author, using traits of fiction, drawings and real photos does a delightful job creating a biography that is simplified and fun for upper elementary to middle school readers.
