El Deafo

This insightful graphic novel handles the loss of hearing of its main character, a bunny named Cece. While the experience of losing hearing at a young age is unusual, the book handles many common childhood concerns, such as loneliness, self-conciousness, making (and keeping) friends, and the difficulties of sticking up for oneself. Sometimes sad, sometimes humorous, it definitely has a ring of authenticity about it. When she is four, Cece acts very much like a four year old, right down to wearing her favorite bathing suit. And when she is ten, she is a believeable ten year old. My kids, who are much closer to that age, think so too!
