How They Croaked chronicles the gory ends of nineteen famous historical figures ranging from King Tut to Marie Curie. The book dedicates a few pages to each person, making this a great option for reading in short sections or sitting down and reading front to back. The grisly descriptions make the reader glad to live in an age of antibiotics! George Washington was more or less killed by doctors after they drained 80 ounces of his blood to “cure” him. The prescribed “cure” for Ludwig Van Beethoven wasn’t much better: a hole was drilled into his stomach and a tube inserted to drain the fluid from his body. The hole was plugged with rags and the same tube was reinserted several times to drain the fluid. Needless to say, it just caused more infection and contributed to his painful death. While this book is targeted at middle school readers, it is an enlightening read for all ages.
