A Prayer for Owen Meany

prayerA Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving

This book was part of our library’s Faith in Fiction book club series. In this story Owen offers an important concept of faith: “FAITH TAKES PRACTICE”. Owen is described in the first sentence of this long story as a “the smallest person I ever knew…, the instrument of my mother’s death, [and] the reason I believe in God.” Owen holds to the belief, to the distress of his best friend (the book’s narrator), that in the accidental death of his friend’s mother, he is an instrument of God. Owen Meany’s character development is accomplished beyond any other I can ever remember reading, and I love a book with great character development. This is a book of considerable heft that took me a long time to read, and still I was sorry it was over when I arrived at the last page.
