May Bird and the Ever After at first seems like many other YA novels: a young girl doesn’t fit in at school, she is teased and bullied, she loves playing make-believe in a forest that no-one else will set foot in, and her best friends are her hairless cat, Somber Kitty, and an imaginary friend from infancy. Then something WEIRD happens! She falls into a lake and when she climbs out she is in a place she doesn’t recognize. The details of the story are unique and interesting in and of themselves, but what made me love this book and the two following books, was the way it was written. The characters are enthralling, the style of writing is engaging. I was deeply invested in everything that was going on from the first moment to the last.
