The Women in the Castle

The Women in the Castle by Jessica Shattuck

recommended by Amber

Set in the aftermath of the World War II, this book focuses on the perspective of widows who survived the war. Marianne’s husband was executed after being caught trying to assassinate Hitler. After the war, Marianne tries to find and take care of the widows and children of other would-be assassins by bringing them to a once grand castle that belonged to her husband’s ancestors. While I appreciate the new perspective in learning about World War II, I felt like the author left too many unanswered questions and unresolved story lines. For other perspectives of World War II, I would suggest Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale or Ruth Sepetys’ Salt to the Sea.
