This is a detailed and highly researched account of the early days of U.S. manned space exploration, with the focus on the first mission to the moon. There are lots of personal and family interactions among the astronauts and other NASA staff, and the book reads more like a novel than a science book. Even though the reader may know how a mission is going to turn out, the author leads us through a lot of white-knuckled tension as the astronauts struggle with complex instructions and maneuvers of their spacecraft. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who would like to learn about this exciting time in our history, either for the first time or as a review of the 1960’s space race.
