recommended by Joy E.

The story is about Anya’s life, which starts in Leningrad. She tells the story to her daughters in the form of a Russian fairy tale. She has never been close to her daughters and is fearful of many things. Her daughters, Meredith, who runs the family apple orchard, and Nina, a famous photojournalist, return home as their father is dying. The daughters begin to care for their mother. They take a trip to Alaska and it is there they learn the true story of their mother’s life and the reason for her fear. They find a sister who they were unaware existed. Both Meredith and Nina overcome their own limiting feelings during this journey with their mother.
