Islandborn by Junot Diaz

Junot Diaz, who won the Pulitzer Prize for The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao in 2007 is also the author of the adult fiction book, This is How You Lose Her (we have it in the library) and the short story book, Drown. Diaz, born in the Dominican Republic immigrated to New Jersey when he was young. Lola, the main character of Islandborn has an assignment to draw a picture of the Island where she was born. However she was only a baby when she immigrated to the United States and doesn’t remember the Island. So Lola asks various relatives and neighborhood friends what the Island was like. She is told many happy memories, as well as not so happy memories. This colorful book, illustrated by Leo Espinosa is a wonderful book full of culture. Although there is controversy surrounding the author right now (he denies any misconduct), this is still an excellent children’s book about diversity.
